Major transport infrastructure doesn’t appear overnight.
It is delivered by teams of engineers working through staging constraints, live interfaces, shifting ground conditions, quality hold points and tight programmes, often long before the public ever sees the finished result.
For Project Engineer Venura Karunarathne, this has become familiar territory.
With more than seven years’ experience across road, rail, bridge, tunnel and airport projects, Venura has steadily built a career in high-compliance, large-scale transport environments. His experience spans major packages including West Gate Tunnel, Western Sydney Airport, Sydney Metro, Melbourne Airport Rail and, most recently, the Melbourne Airport Third Runway Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
Venura’s experience has developed across several major transport packages rather than a single project environment.
Across the West Gate Tunnel Project and North East Link (EBTA), he supported asphalt works across multiple construction packages, contributing to quality assurance processes and site coordination within large-scale pavement programs.
He has also worked across runway pavement works, bridge interfaces and complex staging environments on major transport upgrades.
“I enjoy being part of teams delivering infrastructure that people will use every day,” Venura explains.
"The scale is challenging, but it’s the coordination and problem-solving on site that makes it rewarding.”
On a typical day, Venura might be:
It’s detailed, methodical work, particularly on projects where documentation, traceability and quality assurance requirements are rigorous.
"Attention to detail matters,” he says.
"On high-volume pavement or structural works, small errors compound quickly. The discipline around documentation and quality control protects the whole team.”
Few engineers gain exposure across airports, rail, major roads and bridges early in their careers.
Working across sectors has given Venura a broad perspective. Each environment brings its own operational constraints and delivery risks. Airports operate under strict compliance frameworks. Rail requires careful staging and coordination. Major road upgrades involve complex traffic management and sequencing.
The common thread across all of them is disciplined delivery and strong coordination between design and site teams.

With major infrastructure works continuing across Victoria, engineers with cross-sector delivery experience are increasingly valuable within project teams.
For Venura, the focus remains straightforward:
"Keep learning. Take on responsibility. And contribute to projects that make a difference.”
At CaSE Contractors, we are proud to support engineers building real project experience across live infrastructure environments.
