The $2.7 billion West Gate Tunnel Project is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban. It is being delivered by CPB Contractors and John Holland (CPBJH JV) and will serve as a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge. The project aims to provide a second river crossing, improve travel times and safety, and reduce truck traffic on residential streets.
CaSE & Pike Design were awarded several bridge engineering and temporary works packages for the project. This included a bridge over the Maribyrnong River connecting the tunnels to an elevated road above Footscray Road, as well as ramps to the port at MacKenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road for direct freeway access. An elevated roadway also connects to CityLink, Dynon Road, and Footscray Road, running above the centre of Footscray Road.
In addition to temporary works design, CaSE was responsible for analysing more than 100 girders in the steel composite bridge structure. Using MIDAS Civil software, the team assessed stage deflections, optimised lifting and construction methodology, and ensured structural stability during all temporary stages of bridge construction.
