Tintagel Castle in North Cornwall, England, is one of Britain’s most iconic historic sites. In 2019, a new footbridge was constructed to recreate the original crossing from the mainland to the headland ruins, enhancing the visitor experience. The site is one of English Heritage’s top five attractions, drawing around 200,000 visitors annually.
Set 57 metres above sea level, the bridge comprises two independent 33-metre-long cantilever sections with a 40mm gap between them. Each cantilever consists of two welded plate box girders.
CaSE provided a range of services during the maintenance works following the bridge’s completion.
In the pre-construction phase, CaSE delivered specialist construction and commercial guidance to address early signs of corrosion within the structure. This included developing methodologies, designing temporary works packages, and building a cost plan.
During the maintenance phase, CaSE provided senior specialist and supervisory personnel to manage the works, representing American Bridge UK in daily interactions with English Heritage (the client).
