Westgate Tunnel, Melbourne

West Gate Tunnel – Melbourne

The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, providing a much needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.

The project is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban and will be built by construction contractors CPB Contractors and John Holland (CPBJH JV). In 2019 and 2020 CaSE Australia were awarded a number of bridge engineering and temporary works packages. The project comprises a number of bridge structures including precast segmental and steel composite:

  • A bridge over the Maribyrnong River to connect the tunnels with an elevated road above Footscray Road
  • Ramps to the port at MacKenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road for direct freeway access
  • Elevated roadway connecting to CityLink, Dynon Road and Footscray Road, running above the centre of Footscray Road

  • Review of construction methodology
  • Stage by Stage Analyses of Steel girders during various stages of construction
  • Design of temporary works to support steel girders in their temporary condition and ensure stability
  • Permanent Work constructability review
  • Design of falsework and formwork for precast segmental portals
  • Design Management
  • Interface between designer, Contractor, IV

Apart from temporary works design, CaSE scope includes the analysis of more than 100 girders of the steel composite bridge structure using MIDAS Civil software to analyze stage deflections, optimize lifting and construction methodology, and ensure stability of the structure in all temporary stages while the bridge is being built.

Output includes:

  • Deflections during erection
  • Lifting design for girders
  • Reactions for temporary works design

Reactions for modifications of Permanent works

  • Florian Dieterle
  • Sam Guoliang Li
  • Jorge Llopis
